iPhone Update to Add Street View, Extra Audio Inputs

October 27th, 2008 by SJC | Filed under New Products, Rumours, iPhone.

Leaks sprung over at Mac Rumours are hinting at a few of the new features we can expect in the next update of the iPhone OS. Among them are the ability for developers to make use of audio inputs from third-party devices, which finally promises to bring sound recording to the iPod Touch.

But the feature grabbing all the headlines is the addition of Street View to the Maps application. This handy feature allows you to get a photo of your destination, and also provides hours of entertainment for people who have nothing better to do than crawl the archives looking for the most embarrassing accidental snaps they can find.

Meanwhile, El Reg reports more sightings of the Google streetview camera cars around the UK, suggesting that a roll-out over here should come at some point in the near future.

This weekend also saw the standalone version of Google Earth debut in the App Store, priced at free. It really is an amazing product, giving you access to the same collection of terrain-mapped imagining as the desktop version, and once again showing off the hidden power of the iPhone platform.
