Live Blogging the Psystar Keynote
October 30th, 2008 by SJC | Filed under News.9:56am Was a little worried back there because we were running late. Never been to Miami before so didn’t know the bus routes. Not a problem, though. Straight in and to our seats. No queuing like you get with Apple.
9:58am I think they’re playing Gorillaz. Music’s a bit tinny. Think it’s coming from someone’s mobile.
10:00am And we’re off. Not much of a crowd, though.
10:02am Psystar president Rudy Pedraza is up on stage. Wearing a black turtle neck, blue jeans and I think those are white New Balances. Guy’s obviously got a pair.
10:04am Several people in the chatroom are saying they didn’t even know Psystar was holding an event today. It wasn’t well publicised. Typical liberal Mac media bias.
10:05am Financials first: in the last quarter they’ve sold literally dozens of OpenPCs and earned “a packet.”
10:07am Actually, I think those might be Converse All Stars.
10:08am Brief mention of the Apple lawsuit. Not sure if “kiss my arse” is a legal term or not.
10:10am On to the hardware. We’ve already heard all about the Blu-Ray and GeForce 9600GT. But that’s not going to stop him.
10:11am “We listen to our customers.” They’re keeping FireWire on all models.
10:12am Also PS/2, 9-pin serial and parallel printer ports. “Our customers have a lot of legacy devices Apple wants them to just throw away.”
10:14am 3.5″ floppies to be standard across the range.
10:15am They don’t look chunky enough to be Nikes. Maybe Reeboks? I can’t see any logo.
10:16am “Psystar’s innovation continues to leave Apple eating our dust.”
10:18am Fluorescent lighting! Like you get on tricked-out Novas and Saxos.
10:19am It’s going to come in your choice of white, blue, red or green.
10:21am I’m thinking those could be a pair of bleached Green Flashes. Haven’t seen a pair of them since I was little.
10:22am “We don’t know what Jobs is talking about when he calls the NetBook market ‘nascent’.” He sounds genuinely confused.
10:23am Introducing the Psystar NetBook. Looks like a re-badged Dell Inspiron Mini 9.
10:24am Correction: it is a Dell Inspiron Mini 9. They’ve just stuck a Psystar sticker on it.
10:25am At least they’re crediting TUAW as their “R and D partner”.
10:26am I’m starting to think they’re some American brand of trainer I’m not familiar with.
10:27am Oh, he did not just say “one more thing”? Yes. Yes he did.
10:28am They’re going to be introducing a mobile phone, a media player, an internet access device, a stop watch, a calendar, a ‘to do’ list, a calculator and a backgammon game.
10:29am Okay, apparently these are all one device.
10:30am Introducing Open Phone (!)
10:31am What the hell is that? A skinned Android mobile?

10:33am “We want to give our customers total freedom. Each Open Phone will come with an EPROM programmer. Apple doesn’t give you that kind of freedom. No they don’t.”
10:35am Free WiFi from Linksys. “You can find their free open WiFi points everywhere.” Sounds good.
10:38am Now Rudy’s taking questions from the audience.
10:41am Okay, turns out there just a cheap pair of sneakers he got from Wal*Mart.
10:43am We’ve just been escorted out. Man, Psystar have the Apple playbook down pat.
Okay, let the in-depth analysis begin.

Pure genius guys, thanks for being their for us. I tried to get there, but got lost trying to find the address to: 1 Finite Loop….
Ah. So you’re who they put the other chair out for.
[...] They first contacted us a few weeks ago, after being disgusted at the way Æ was treated while covering their product launch at the end of October. Earlier today we learnt that this person — who out of [...]
